How dental implants work
A tooth has two parts: the part that people see when you smile, and the root of the tooth that keeps it secure in your mouth when you are eating and talking. However, if you have lost a tooth, for whatever reason, replacement teeth alone will not replicate this structure. With dental implants, however, you will have a metal screw attached to your jawbone. This replicates the natural tooth’s root. The screw is securely fitted, once the gums heal around it, which takes a few weeks and you will have temporary replacement teeth attached to the screw in the meantime. Afterwards, you can then have your replacement teeth of crowns, bridges or dentures attached to the screws, depending on the number of teeth you are replacing. Crowns are normally used for a single tooth replacement, whereas bridges are used for several teeth, or dentures for a full set.
Discretion
Dental implants are a really discreet treatment. Once they are fitted, nobody should notice that you don’t have a full set of natural teeth. This is because the replacement teeth will be matched to any natural teeth you have, as well as each other. You should also be able to rely upon your dental implants to stay in place, regardless of what you are eating or the amount you are saying. Choosing dental implants will also mean that you won’t need to remove them at bedtime, so if you don’t fancy having to take your teeth out and then giving your other half a kiss, then dental implants could be the way to go for you!
Health benefits
Having dental implants also protects your gums from being exposed further to bacteria. With gaps in your smile, it leaves the gums open to a greater risk of infection. You may also find that your speech improves by filling in the gaps, as well as your ability to chew food. If you have experienced jaw pain, since having missing teeth, this could also be resolved with dental implants. What’s more, you could even look visibly younger, once your implants have been fitted. Sometimes, people’s faces can become aged, when there are gaps in their smile. By filling these in, however, it gives your face better structure and support to allow the skin to smooth and appear more youthful – a real bonus, right?!
